Mid 650s BC

Psamtek I drives off Assyrian invaders and defeats Kushite kings. Egypt is unified, and the Late Period begins.

Circa 610 - 595 BC

Nekau II beings to construct a canal from the Nile to the Red Sea to foster trade.

Circa 570 - 526 BC

Despite looming threat of Persian invasion, the economy prospers, led by spectacular agricultural yields.

525 BC

Egypt is invaded, defeated and captured by the Persian ruler Cambyses at the Battle of Pelosium. The Persian Period begins.

510 - 497 BC

King Darius completes construction of Nekau II's canal from the Nile to the Red Sea, aiding communication between Egypt and the larger Persian Empire.

404 BC

Amytraios retakes Egypt from Persia. Egypt is briefly back in native hands.

343 - 342 BC

Persia, led by Artaxerxes I, successfully re-invades Egypt, ending the last period of native Egyptian rule.

332 BC

Alexander the Great invades Egypt and becomes Pharaoh.

331 BC

Alexander founds the city of Alexandria.

305 - 385 BC

Ptolemy I founds the Mouseion at Alexandria. The Mouseion houses Alexandria's famous library, which eventually stores over 700,000 volumes.
