The two basic items in the Egyptian diet are bread and beer, though they also raised cattle, sheep and goats, mainly for the meat. Cheese and vegetables, such as leeks, beans, radishes, cucumbers and lettuces were also eaten. They used honey to sweeten things because there were no sugar in Ancient Egypt. The Egyptians cooked over an open fire. The meat was either roasted on spits or stewed in cooking pots and the bread was baked in pottery containers placed around the fire. Meals were usually prepared outside. Scientists have found a lot of grit in ancient loaves of bread, which might of blown in while the loaves were being prepared. The Egyptians put some of their food into tombs because they believed that the dead needed food as much as the living. Some of that food has survived to today due to the very dry Egyptian climate.
